Retaining walls in New York City take a beating. From the schist ridges of the Bronx and upper Manhattan down through Park Slope's brownstones, Flatbush's Victorians, Forest Hills' brick Tudors, and the steep moraine hills of Staten Island, every neighborhood sits on different ground, and every wall has its own story of frost heave, water damage, and slow collapse.
New York City Retaining Wall serves homeowners and property managers across the five boroughs and surrounding areas. We know the freeze-thaw cycles that crack your mortared fieldstone, the clogged weep holes behind your 1970s concrete block, the hydrostatic pressure that bows your wall after a nor'easter, and the eroding slopes that threaten your driveway. We've rebuilt timber and railroad tie walls that were installed decades ago, stabilized leaning stone walls on hillside properties in Riverdale and Grymes Hill, and retrofitted drainage on old rubble foundations in Harlem and Park Slope. When your wall starts to lean, bulge, or crack, we show up fast, diagnose the real problem, and get it fixed right.
Retaining Wall Repair and Installation in New York City (11213)
New York City's terrain is a patchwork of glacial deposits, bedrock, and fill. You've got sandy outwash in southern Brooklyn and Queens where drainage is fast but settling is common. You've got steep, rocky grades over Manhattan schist from Riverdale to the Upper West Side, where old mortared fieldstone walls hold up yards that were cut into the hillside fifty or a hundred years ago. You've got the moraine hills of Staten Island, where 1970s and 80s semi-detached homes sit on slopes that shift and settle. And you've got brownstone row houses in Harlem and Park Slope, where the basement walls and yard walls are under constant pressure from groundwater, especially after heavy rain.
The walls we see most often are old mortared fieldstone and schist rubble, brick, poured concrete, CMU block, and rotting timber and railroad tie walls from the 70s and 80s. They fail from freeze-thaw cycles, frost heave, clogged or missing drainage, heavy downpours, high water tables, and the sheer weight and movement of the soil behind them. Our team has installed new walls in concrete, segmental block, natural stone, and timber. We repair leaning and bowing walls, replace collapsed sections, install or retrofit drainage systems, and stabilize slopes before they fail. We've worked on narrow lots in tight neighborhoods, coordinated with HOAs, and navigated the permit requirements for walls over 4 feet or supporting a surcharge. We're fully insured, and we know the work.

How a Job Works in New York City
You call us at (929) 552-6465 or reach out online. We schedule a free on-site assessment, usually within a few days. We look at the wall, the grade, the drainage, the soil, and what's behind it. We ask about the history, any recent movement or damage, and what you want the wall to do. We take photos, measure, and give you a realistic estimate and timeline. No surprises.
Once you approve, we mobilize. On most New York City properties, access is tight, so we plan carefully. We may need to stage materials on the street with a permit, work around parked cars, or coordinate with neighbors. We excavate and remove the old wall or repair the damaged section, install new drainage (gravel, perforated pipe, and weep holes), build the new wall to code, and backfill and compact the soil. On hillside properties, we may need to cut and brace the slope. On properties with a surcharge like a driveway or fence, we build accordingly and pull the necessary permits from the city. The work takes anywhere from a few days for a small repair to several weeks for a full replacement on a large or complex site.
When we're done, we clean up. Debris goes, the site is graded and compacted, and we walk the property with you to make sure everything is solid and meets your expectations. We leave your yard ready to use.
Pricing depends on the size of the wall, the material, site access, soil and drainage conditions, and whether we're starting from scratch or repairing an existing wall. A typical block or concrete retaining wall runs from $25 to $35 per square foot. Natural stone or boulder walls start around $25 per square foot. Timber walls are the most economical, starting at $20 per square foot. Repairs on existing walls usually start at $1,500 and scale with the damage and the work required. Drainage retrofits on old stone walls run $2,500 and up. Leaning or collapsed wall repairs start at $2,500. Slope stabilization and erosion control work varies widely depending on the site and the solution. The best way to know what your job will cost is to call us for a free estimate. We'll give you a real number based on what we see on your property.
